I didn’t go to New York with the intentions of writing a foodie blog. Actually, I wasn’t expecting much except home cooking since I was staying with a friend who is Gluten Free (from here on known as GF). To my surprise, some of my favorite experiences were based around food!
My favorite street food. Belgium waffles. Go figure! I just got back from my Honeymoon in Belgium and still have a taste for these delicious treats. We found a food truck in the middle of a busy section of the city and they served up an awesome waffle delight. I could easily have been on the streets of Belgium… well… minus the skyscrapers! I had mine with their “secret sauce” it tasted like a gingerbread cookie mixed with peanut butter, and a scoop of ice cream. Yes I can still appreciate ice cream even though my hubby creates and brings home gelato for work all the time. He’s the best!
Next was my favorite BBQ. I have literally told EVERYONE about this place. My co-worker Roe just went to NY last week and even tried it. She agrees…AMAZING! Blue Smoke. There are two locations. One is in Battery Park (Roe went here) and the other is on East 27th Street called Flatiron (I went here). They weren’t exactly the same and yesterday we compared notes. The ribs a Battery Park were only ok. The ribs at Flatiron were outside of this world. I had the sampler because I didn’t know which style of rib I would like. The problem was that I liked ALL of them! Our waiter was great because he guided me in my sauce choices for each type of rib. Who knew they would be good with different sauces! The mac n cheese was SUPER creamy and delicious. The deviled eggs for appetizer are highly recommended by the locals. Oh and Roe says… try the Watermelon Daiquiri! I can’t say enough about this place, but you’ll have to try it out. FYI their menu is labeled for GF and their sauces are GF so my friend could indulge with no worries!
Another awesome place (I actually went back for lunch the next day because I liked it so much!) was Bistango. This is an Italian restaurant that offers most of their menu with and without Gluten. I chose to try the GF pasta with my dish and was completely surprised that I liked it so much! My dish of choice was the Fusilli Bistango. “fusilli pasta with chicken, broccoli, sundried tomato, pink sauce”. Holy delicious! The restaurant is small. Probably only about 15-20 tables. But the atmosphere is almost like being in someone’s home. So warm and inviting! Great for people watching. We would have sat outside, but for the insane heat wave attacking the north this summer!
And for me, no trip would be complete without a pickle from Katz’s Deli in the Lower East Side. They were so good that we bought a quart to take back to the apartment and snack on. I was in 7th heaven that night.
I’d love to hear about some delicious places you have eaten in New York! What are your favorites?!
